"Re-Activate - Adaptive Re-use"

Re-Activate by Adaptive Re-use concerns brownfield sites that become available for urban development as well as abandoned buildings.

We know that diversity is the basis for the city's vitality, and it can only be created over time. That asks not for a fixed masterplan but a flexible development framework that allows adaptation and flexibility regarding changing external parameters. KCAP considers the status quo as the first stage and starting point of an urban transformation process, carried out with a holistic vision as a guiding principle that can adapt to changing circumstances, transforming the city by re-using, re-cycling, re-thinking what is already there.

The challenge is to integrate the new development. Due to higher densities, the new program needs to be reconciled with the existing urban fabric. When skillfully done, these sites create a seedbed for urbanity.

Each place provides various resources that have to be dealt with carefully to get carbon and climate neutral, and to transform our cities into vibrant, open, inclusive, and adaptable places. As Patrick Geddes wrote 1923 in ‘Dramatisations of History’: “A city is more than a place in space; it is a journey in time... selecting and blending memories of the past with experiences of the present and hopes for the future.”
